PHOENIX – Bed bugs are a problem in Arizona, and state lawmakers are working to protect residents and homeowners from bed bug infestations.
The legislature is considering a bill that would require a landlord to notifiy a prospective tenant of any prior bed bug infestations.
Tom Simplot with the Arizona Multi-Housing Association helped write the possible new law. He says that the bill sets forth responsibilities of the tenant and the landlord.
The bill would require the tenant to prevent the bed bugs from spreading to other units and to notify the landlord, and the landlord would have no more than two weeks to eradicate the problem.
It can cost up to several thousands of dollars to get rid of bed bugs.
